I have always felt a great affection for
Simon Peter. Who doesn’t love a guy who jumps out of a boat without a
second thought at the call of his Master?
I know I’m going to love getting to meet
Peter in eternity and listen to him tell even more stories about Jesus
than what would fit into the Bible (or into all of the books in the
world, according to John 21:25).
Earlier this month, as I was reading John
13:5-9, about Jesus washing the feet of His disciples, I was struck
again by Peter’s ardent, passionate, ebullient love for His Lord. But
something else struck me too, and I quickly jotted this in the margin of
my Bible above verse 9:
Enthusiastic, impetuous Peter. Loving Jesus with his whole heart but still trying to be in control. Could this be me, too?
Do I meet Jesus with great enthusiasm and
wholehearted love, and yet still try to be in control of everything
around me rather than resting in Him and letting Him do unto me (and in
me) what He will?
Do you?
It’s something to ponder.
